Each lesson consists of ten vocabulary words, a set of grammar forms, and a Latin saying.  Exercises reinforce memory work, teach systematic grammar, and provide simple translation.  Prayers, songs, conversational Latin, history lessons, maps, and games add interest and motivation.

The Teacher Manual includes keyed copy of the student book and provides grammar overview, teaching guidelines, recitation schedule, scripted lesson plans, tests, keys, and background information on Latin sayings and Roman history.  Both Christian and classical content. The thirty lessons can be completed in a year or longer, depending on age of student and experience of teacher.

Latina Christiana was designed as a beginning course for students of all ages.  If you have some question about which level Latin course is right for you, read our "Which Latin Program Should I Start With Chart".  This course was specifically written for the teacher with no background in Latin.

Latina Christiana and Memoria Press' Famous Men of Rome make the perfect pair. Latina Christiana's teacher book includes a small, free study guide for Famous Men of Rome, and these heroic stories of 30 great Romans will make the study of Latin come alive.

As an added bonus, when you complete either Latina Christiana I or II, we will send each of your students a CLSA (Christian Latin Society of America) certificate of accomplishment for a nominal charge. We want to encourage your students to continue their study of Latin and reward them for their hard work. To request your completion certificate, click here.

Latina Christiana is a  6  7 Time First Place winner of the Practical Homeschooling Reader's Choice Award, a Top 100 Pick of all Homeschool Texts from Cathy Duffy, and Classical Christian Homeschooling's Top Pick.

"Latina Christiana is the best thing on the market for grammar level Latin, hands down!"
       - Wes Callihan, Schola Tutorial Service

"With this wonderful resource, it is now possible for anyone with a love for and a desire to learn Latin to do so....We can master Latin."
        - K. S.,  from article published in Mother's Messages

"Latina Christiana is clear, easy to understand and follow, and systematic.  Although many of the sayings are Christian in orientation, the program is certainly usable by parents who are of other faiths."

Latina Christiana
and Prima Latina are the only grammar level Latin programs recommended by Susan Wise Bauer in The Well Trained Mind. Visit her website online and purchase her guide to classical homeschooling, The Well Trained Mind.
Susan Wise Bauer, author of The Well Trained Mind

"I recently started teaching Latin at the elementary level, and after evaluating four different programs, including Martha Wilson's Latin Primer, I chose Cheryl Lowe's Latina Christiana.  I would like to enthusiastically recommend it for you to carry for homeschoolers for the following reasons:
1) The program is written with homeschoolers in mind.  No prior knowledge of Latin is assumed.
2) Detailed lesson plans give specific, clear instructions for presenting all new concepts.
3) Roman history, using the Famous Men of Rome series, is included in the lesson plans.  It makes the study of Latin come alive.  History questions are covered in the included tests.
4) English derivatives from Latin words are specifically covered--a great vocabulary builder.
5) The focus is on the use of Latin by the Christian Church as opposed to a classical focus.  For example, in Level 1, the Lord's prayer, a table prayer, and two hymns are learned in Latin.
6) Compared to the Latin Primer, Cheryl Lowe's program is much clearer and better organized, especially for those who have no background in Latin or language study.
7) It's inexpensive--$35 for Level 1 teacher's manual, student book, and audio tape.
8) After using this program, the student should be prepared
to read Latin classics independently."

"The student book is well organized, with all the material needed for one lesson grouped together...The teacher's edition assumes absolutely no prior knowledge of Latin or any other foreign language."

"We looked for a Latin program to suit our family's needs for a long time... Our search ended with Latina Christiana! The content, excellent quality, and organized layout make this an impressive beginning course..."

        - Catholic Heritage Curricula

Which Latin Pronunciation Should I Use, Ecclesiastical or Classical?
"The two pronunciations are different for those speaking Latin. Most of our kids aren't learning Latin to speak it. Ecclesiastical would be more helpful for those singing classical music or singing church liturgy or traditional church music.  I like Latina Christiana because of its scope. It also has the new Lingua Angelica that goes along with it; the reading and translation course helps kids make use of the Latin grammar they are learning through Latina Christiana. Plus, it has the CD of the beautiful Latin church music, which just adds that touch of beauty and devotion to the Lord to a Latin study."
       - Christine Miller, Classical Christian Education Support Loop

"I love Lingua Angelica! Its addition really makes Latina Christiana the most compelling Latin curriculum for the grammar stage."
      - Christine Miller, Classical Christian Homeschooling http://www.classicalhomeschooling.org

"Laura Berquist, author of Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum, recommends using Latina Christiana I over two years. To help your child see the benefit of studying Latin, you must first find it yourself. The resources offered in Latina Christiana I are very helpful, and motivated homeschooling parents will find this program to offer substance at a reasonable price."
         - Martha R., HomeschoolChristian.com

"The best Christian Latin text available."

PARENT REVIEWS

"We've been operating a small Latin co-op in the central NJ area for 6 years now, using LC and Henle First Year and Second Year. One of my students just scored a 720 on the SAT II, and we've place first in our central NJ region for a Latin quiz show game, called Certamen, with the New Jersey Junior Classical League. We've been competing with public and private school students 2-3 years older than us and holding our own.

Thank you for all your excellent materials...and our teacher never studied Latin before she started with her own daughter seven years ago!"
     - Eunice A., Latin teacher

"After using Artes Latinae and Canon Press Latin Primer, I am delighting in Latina Christiana.  I have started a small cottage class, and the students are doing so well and enjoying it also...the organization of LC is better than anything else we've done."
     - E.H., homeschooling parent

"I absolutely LOVE your Latina Christiana program. You make it so easy and understandable. I cannot commend you enough! Thanks for all you've done to make Latin accessible to us plebeians!"
     - L.F., homeschooling parent

"I just wanted to say that I started my eight-year-old son on this curriculum at the beginning of this school year, and he is doing very well with it. I was simply amazed at how much he is learning in a very short time. What I like best about this program is it does not assume any prior knowledge of Latin on the part of the instructor, so it is short, easy steps. We love it!"
     - Merrilee M.

"I once asked for a poll on The Well Trained Mind board on what was their favorite Latin program, and perhaps it was just a lucky day for Latina Christiana, but it certainly won, hands down!"
     - M.E., Vegsource Message Boards

"I love your course! I keep telling my friends how much fun it has been to start Latin--I feel as though I'm meeting a new best friend."
     - S.J.S., Latin teacher

"I'm really enjoying learning Latin as well. I ordered the Latin primer from the Logos School before I heard about LC, and I can tell you that your program is much, much better, especially for parents who need to learn along with their children. I'm a lawyer and keep thinking I wish I'd known Latin when I was in law school."
     - S.E., homeschooling parent

"I have taught my own children using your Latina Christiana books and Henle, and I think yours is the best curriculum available. I have also looked at or tried Matin Latin, Latin is Fun, Latin Primer, Elementary Latin, Minimus by Cambridge Press, Artes Latinae, Latin's Not So Tough, and maybe one or two more. Your approach is the most thorough, interesting, and systematic."
     - V.B., Latin teacher

"I learned (Latina Christiana) right along with my daughter. That was such a special time. I am barely one step ahead of her. She likes to tease me that she has been my curriculum 'guinea pig.' We have shared something, however, that my other children won't experience."
     - C.M.

"I have found Latina Christiana to be one of the best set of Latin textbooks that I have ever worked with, and the students seem to be doing very well with them. Thanks!"
     - C.W., Latin teacher, POPCS

"Thank you for your wonderful curriculum.  I feel I have discovered a Latin program that I can use and learn along with my children. We have tried other programs and always ended in frustration...(My sons were especially thrilled to score better on the first test than I did!)"
     - K.T., homeschooling parent

"We love Latina Christiana as well. It has really been a lot of fun and very educational. My son is very language oriented, so he has really been thriving with the program. We just got our copy of Lingua Angelica, and it seems to be just wonderful as well."
     - K., Latina Christiana Group at Yahoo, subscribe at LatinaChristiana-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

"I will add that my children are truly enjoying Latin. Quite an accomplishment, if I do say so myself."
    -
L.,  parent

"I highly recommend Latina Christiana for singers of all ages who are looking for a way to learn Latin."
     - M.S., parent

"... I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with Latina Christiana.  It is the best laid out and most complete beginner course I have ever seen..."

     - T.W., homeschooling parent

"I am doing LC I this year with my two oldest (dd's-10 yrs & 7 yrs). We have just completed our first week/lesson in LC I. We are using all the LC materials to include the flashcards and CD. I have had many years of Spanish instruction myself, but for some reason the thought of teaching Latin was very intimidating! I must say, this first week was encouraging!"
     - D., CA (Yahoo loop)

"I sent for your Latina Christiana I & II teacher & student books a few months ago.  Since then, I have looked at them a lot, and I want to say that you did a wonderful job putting them together.  I have spent three years doing Latin with my two oldest children, and your material is much better organized, with better explanations than any other Latin materials I have used."
     - S.C., Murrysville, PA

"I would first like to thank you sincerely for your wonderful Latin programs. Latina Christiana is an answer to prayer for homeschoolers.  I have taught foreign language in schools before, but never have I used a program as thorough as this one.  My children are eight and ten and both are learning and benefiting greatly from this course. We are currently in the middle of Latina Christiana I and plan to use Latina Christiana II next year."

     - Y.R., Terrytown, LA

"Hooray for Cheryl Lowe!  Finally I have found an introductory Latin program for elementary students which I can enthusiastically recommend."
    - M.C., Nache Journal

"I used your Latina Christiana this school year to teach my fifth grade son.  We both enjoyed the course very much.  My son greets his Cub Scout friends, 'Salvete' and is excited when he finds Latin phrases he understands."
    - K.B., Milford, NY

Here is an inspirational example of what you can accomplish with even your youngest students by introducing them to Latin. We have to agree, it is amazing what even 2nd and 3rd graders can learn by actually jumping into Latin grammar. You may not finish Latina Christiana I in the first year, but your students will have an outstanding head start.

"I'm teaching my 2nd Grade son from LC I. He's doing great. Part of the reason is probably because I, too, am studying Latin. Anyway, he came up to me yesterday and held up this big coin he got at a birthday party and said proudly, 'Hey look! 'E pluribus unum'!' I like to relate the sayings in LC to what they're learning in the lessons--we were talking earlier about what you might use the different cases for--so I then pointed out 'You see, 'pluribus'-that's the ablative case.' And he had no problem with this concept, even if it is the 3rd declension, which he won't learn for awhile.

I compare this to the Spanish class he's taking in school. Now, he goes to a very good private school: I know what they're teaching them is well above what it would be in most schools. But in their Spanish class, all they do is watch movies and sometimes get lists of nouns; as far as I can tell, there's no grammar at all. He's been taking Spanish for two years, and they haven't conjugated a verb yet. Maybe there's a method to their, well, method; but you really wonder how much kids could achieve if they were pushed a little."
      - G (Latina Christiana Group at yahoogroups.com) This group discusses using Latina Christiana, as well as general methods of teaching Latin.

"I used your Latina Christiana for our homeschool with my nine-year-old son and twelve-year-old daughter.  Not only were the lessons easy to teach, understand, and review, but my children liked the course.  In addition, we finished the program."

    - B.C., Loudon, TN

"We just completed Book 1 and are now on Lesson 2 of Book 2 of LC. I'm so glad we're learning Latin. Even my youngest does well with it."
     - C., NC

"I began teaching Latina Christiana last month. There are nine children and two adults, plus myself, in the class, and I just wanted to tell you how much we are enjoying it.  We are already planning to continue the program next year.  Please keep up the good work.
P. S. My five-year-old daughter knows all the vocabulary words so far and the verb forms and the sayings."
    - C.P. Vernonia, OR

"I'd like to tell you that I think you're doing God's work by making Latin instruction available for parents. Learning Latin has definitely brought my son and me closer to the Church and the more we learn, the more we appreciate the beauty of the liturgy."
    - S.E., homeschool parent

"Many thanks for creating such a beautiful Christian Latin program.  My language background is in German.  Since I have no prior knowledge of Latin, I am learning along with my son."
     - T.R., Deerfield, IL

"One more vote here for Latina Christiana."
     - S., C'ville

"We are now completing the first year using Latina Christiana I– and we are learning Latin!  Thank you for making this so easy to teach."
     - S.S., Pittsburgh, CA

"Having never studied Latin myself, I especially appreciate the thoroughness of Book I's Teacher Manual Lesson Plans and the clarity of its layout.  It's visually very well organized.  Many thanks."

     - L.E., New York, NY

"Last year at this time I ordered Latina Christiana Book I from you, in order to teach my children elementary Latin.  I had no background in this language myself, and so needed a course that was very user friendly.  My children and I thoroughly enjoyed using your program and cannot compliment you enough on it."

     - R.A., ID

"My nine-year-old son is really enjoying learning Latin, and when our pastor asked him to say the table blessing at our last parish pizza supper, my son said, 'In English or Latin, Father?' He'd memorized the prayer in Latin from the back of his student book and couldn't wait to show off his new accomplishment. Of course, Father John asked him to say it in Latin and he was able to recite it without any errors. I had about a dozen moms come up to me afterward to find out where Noah was learning Latin, so I took the opportunity to really plug your book. We might even organize a cottage school Latin class this summer--how cool is that?"
     - S.E., homeschool parent

"My elementary Latin class went really well. All my students finished the year with either A or B averages.  I was very proud and astonished at how quickly they caught on to the lessons and memorized the declensions and conjugations...Now I have parents wanting me to teach the second year course."

     - K.W., OK
(Former student of Mrs. Lowe's who now teaches Latin)

"We are currently using Latina Christiana I with our nine-year-old and are enjoying it very much.  We use much of your material in our curriculum. Your derivative list in each lesson is our spelling and vocabulary list for the week, and we incorporate the grammar lesson into our English work. My son especially enjoys Roman History, and I'm having a wonderful time learning a new language with him (although I do wish I had his memory!)"

     - M.M., ME

"I wanted to let you know how awesome the Latina Christiana program is."
     - D.H., Sheridan, WY

"My daughter said, 'Mom, this is the first one that makes sense and explains things so you can understand what's going on.' Great program--wish I'd found it a year ago."
    - D.S., Evanston, IL

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What makes Latina Christiana different than all of the other Latin programs?
    • There are several things that make Latina Christiana different (around here, we like to say better).
    • First, Latina Christiana was developed by Mrs. Lowe for parents and teachers with little or no Latin background. Mrs. Lowe actually wrote the program after struggling to learn Latin on her own to teach her two boys. She found that most Latin texts did not explain the most basic ideas that seem second nature to a Latin scholar, but are quite foreign to a neophyte. While struggling through Latin on her own, teaching it to her two boys (both of whom became National Merit Scholars), and starting a Latin school, Mrs. Lowe wrote Latina Christiana so other parents would not have the same difficulties with Latin.
    • Since she first wrote Latina Christiana, Mrs. Lowe has taught hundreds of Latin students and her book has been used by over 50,000 homeschoolers and schools. In addition to the perspective of a beginner, Mrs. Lowe has edited and improved the book over her years of experience to be, in our humble opinion, the best darn Latin book available.
  • How does Latina Christiana translate into high school Latin credits?
    • Unfortunately, there are no universal standards for a full year of high school Latin today. In the past, students completed the whole grammar in one year of high school. However, that is rarely done in even a whole year of college Latin today.

Typically, LC I & II together are more than a semester of high school Latin. In most areas, you will find that they cover more Latin grammar than local high schools do in a year. (As an example, the best public high school in Louisville, KY doesn't begin the subjunctive until the 4th year of Latin. They spend 4 years just learning the Latin grammar!)

      In short:
If you have mastered LC I & II and the first 5 units of Henle Latin I, you will have a very strong year of high school Latin in any school district.
If you have mastered LC I & II, you will have at least a semester of high school Latin and probably a full year in 75% of the school districts.
  • Which program should I use, Latina Christiana (LC) or Prima Latina (PL)?
  • What do I need for Latina Christiana?
    • The Latina Christiana Set includes everything you need, the teacher manual, student book, and CD or tape.
  • What else do you have that is helpful for Latina Christiana?
    • LC Videos include interactive slides and several hours of instruction directly to the student by Leigh Lowe, the author of Prima Latina. These are a great resource for the student to watch or for the teacher to use in planning her lesson.
    • LC Flashcards are color-coded by part of speech and include the sayings, cue words, conjugations, and declensions. They are a great time saver and allow you to start learning vocabulary right away.
    • Famous Men of Rome is a great addition to LC if you are studying Roman history at the same time. In fact, Latina Christiana includes a free study guide to the Famous Men of Rome.
    • Latin Grammar Wall Charts are a great drill and study aid for schools and homeschool classrooms. Put them up on the wall to torture...I mean teach your students Latin grammar forms.
  • I have an X edition student book and a Y edition teacher book, can I use them together?
    • In general, if your books have a brown angel in the middle of the front cover, they may be used together. If your book has a solid blue or red 1-inch border around the front cover with a white background, it can only be used with a similarly covered teacher or student book. The 3rd edition is the current edition for Latina Christiana I.
  • Can I use Classical Pronunciation with Latina Christiana instead of Christian Pronunciation?
    • Of course! Pronunciation is a minor issue in Latin, because there are no Romans arround to correct us. If you would like to use Classical Pronunciation, follow this link for our Classical Pronunciation Guide. Just print it out, and use it instead of the Christian pronunciation guide in the book. (Note: The CD and DVDs use Christian Pronunciation)
    • The only time pronunciation really counts in Latin is for the songs and prayers. These should always use Christian Pronunciation, or they won't sound right.
